Water is actively backing up into your home, a sewage smell is coming from a drain or toilet, more than one fixture is affected at once, or standing water is spreading toward flooring, electronics, or an occupied living space. These situations get worse the longer they sit — waiting until morning usually means more cleanup, not less.
It can probably wait if...
A single drain is running slow but not backing up, there's no odor, and no water is reaching the floor. A slow kitchen or bathroom drain that's still draining — just slowly — can usually hold until regular business hours without getting meaningfully worse overnight.
The middle-ground cases
A drain that goes from slow to fully stopped, or a gurgling sound from a nearby fixture when you run water somewhere else, is worth a call even if nothing has overflowed yet. Gurgling in particular is often an early warning sign of a developing blockage further down the line.
