1. Stop using the affected fixtures
Adding more water to a backed-up system only makes the overflow worse. Stop running sinks, showers, washing machines, or toilets connected to the affected line until the crew arrives.
2. Move anything valuable away from standing water
If water is backing up onto a floor, move rugs, boxes, furniture, and electronics out of the area. Standing water plus electrical outlets is a real hazard — keep them apart.
3. Locate your main water shutoff
You likely won't need it for a drain backup, but knowing where it is saves critical time if the situation escalates to a supply-line issue.
4. Ventilate if there's sewage odor
Open windows and turn on exhaust fans if you smell sewage. It's unpleasant but not usually dangerous in the short term — ventilation just makes waiting more bearable.
